Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Friday called on Nigerians to respect the right of children by providing them necessary support to secure a better future for the country.

Okowa made the call at the 2016 National Children’s Day celebration with the theme: “Protect the Right of the Child in the Face of Violence and Insecurity: End all forms of child abuse’’, in Asaba.

He said his administration was working tirelessly to ensure that the right of every child in the state was protected, adding that “any society that neglects the child will lose its identity.’’

“Children, I assure you that my administration is committed to your growth and your welfare,’’ he said.

Okowa stressed the need for more advocacies on the Child Rights Act.

He said “even if the Child Right Act is already in place in the state, if there are no advocacies, the state will not be able to achieve much.’’

The governor also called on parents and caregivers to support government in bringing up their children in the fear of God.

The governor also urged caregivers to inculcate in children, “good morals and societal values that would help to build them for the future’’.

While felicitating with the children, Okowa appealed to them to be responsible “by giving value to our cultural value’’.

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs Omatsola Williams, commended the children for the peaceful celebration.

She urged corporate organisations to support government in building the lives of children in the country and solicited the support of corporate organisations in the sector.
