TUE, 16 AUGUST 2016-Total telecommunications solutions provider, Globacom has emerged the preferred network in voice services in Nigeria as it got 68% of all new GSM subscriptions in the last 12 months.
Recent statistics published Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), on its website showed that a total 7,477,977 new lines were added between June 2015 and June 2016. Out of this figure, Globacom cornered a staggering 5,063,895 new subscribers, representing 68%, while Airtel came a distant second with 2,414,082 new subscribers.
Conversely, Etisalat and MTN recorded abysmal losses, according to the NCC statistics with 382,336 and 4,403,344 depletion of their customer bases respectively in the last one year.
A breakdown of the report indicated that, with the success achieved by Globacom, the data grandmaster has equally buoyed its share of voice from 21% to 24% with 36.3m subscribers at the end of June, 2016 from its earlier figure of 31,256,677 last year.
MTN on the contrary had its share of voice reduced to 39% from over 45% share of voice which it boasted of last year. The network closed with 58.4 million subscribers at the end of June from its previous record of 62,813,111 subscribers.
With this performance, Glo has reduced the gap between it and MTN, while it has maintained a substantial gap between it and Airtel which was at par with it on share of voice three months ago with 21% each.
Airtel, says the report, whose subscriber base was 29,564,766 at the middle of last year, had remained rooted to 21% of share of voice with 31,978,848 customers at the end of June, 2016.
Etisalat crashed from 22,852,232 which it recorded last year to 22,469,896 customers at the end of June, 2016 to stand at 15% market share.
Globacom’s rising market share in voice in the industry is in tandem with its status as the emerging leader in the data segment where it has for the last one year been atop new internet subscriber acquisitions.
While the industry gained a total of 318, 008 new internet subscribers in June 2016, for instance, Globacom alone had 272,674 of the new subscriptions accounting for about 86 percent of the total internet subscriber growth in the industry in the month of June.
Globacom’s unparalleled growth even in the midst of shrinking economy has been touted as the result of its huge network upgrade embarked on recently added to its avowed commitment to highly innovative products and services in the market.
