Ghana’s ex-president John Jerry Rawlings dies aged 73

THUR, 12 NOV, 2020-theGBJournal- TheGBJournal correspondent in Accra, said the much loved and charismatic ex-Ghana Air Force officer died at 10.00 (Ghana time) at the cardio centre, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after a short illness.
His daughter, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings (MP), a member of Ghana’s parliament for Korley Klotey issued a statement today announcing the death of her father.
The country’s president Nana Addo has issued a letter of condolence to the family and instructed the lowering of the nation’s flag in his honour.
President Addo said, ‘’I have directed that all national flags should fly at half-mast for the next seven (7) days in all parts of the country, and have declared seven days of national mourning from Friday, 13th November to Friday 20th November. In honour of the memory of former President Rawlings, the Vice President and I have suspended our political campaigns for the same period.‘’
He said the government will work closely with the family of President Rawlings on the arrangements for a fitting State funeral for the President, and will keep the nation informed accordingly.
The Ghana opposition party leader and party stalwarts were at Obuase for the upcoming general election when the news broke and they promptly suspended the campaign as mark of respect for the man largely regarded as the champion for the poor.
