FRSC records 758 road traffic accidents in June – Report

ABUJA, AUGUST 12, 2016 – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), says 758 road traffic accidents were recorded in major routes across the country in June, involving 4,720 people with 2,092 sustaining injuries.This is contained in the June 2016 report of the corps made available on Friday in Abuja.

It further showed that 385 victims lost their lives in the accidents that involved 1,224 vehicles with cars recording the highest number, representing 33.9 per cent of the total vehicles involved.

The report showed that Abuja-Lokoja route accounted for the highest number of 40 accidents involving 264 people with 32 deaths and 136 sustaining injuries during the period.

It showed that the FCT recorded the highest number of accidents with 130 cases with Abuja-Kubwa road accounting for 24 cases

Kaduna state ranked second with 59 cases involving 418 people, 35 deaths and 225 serious injuries.

The report also showed that Bauchi state recorded the highest fatalities of 37, ranking first among the high death toll states.

It was observed that two main crashes which occurred along the Jos-Bauchi and Bauchi –Kano roads claimed seven and 12 lives respectively.

The report showed that Lagos-Abuja and Abuja-Kaduna roads ranked second in this category with 28 cases, while Lagos-Ibadan recorded 26 deaths and Abuja 18 deaths.

Kaduna, FCT, Ogun, Lagos and Kano states also recorded high fatalities of 35, 34, 29, 21 and 20 respectively.

The report showed that motorcycles ranked second in the number of vehicles with 252 representing 20.6 per cent, minibus 191, representing 15.6 per cent and trucks 121representing 10 per cent.

It said that 713 vehicles involved in the crashes were commercial, representing 58 per cent, private 487 representing 40 per cent and government and diplomatic two per cent.

The report blamed 421 cases of road traffic accidents on speeding representing 43.8 per cent, and dangerous driving representing 10.1 per cent.
