French Development Agency has set aside 500,000 euro for a renewable energy project, using French technology, at Ganduje in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State.
Already, feasibility project has been undertaken for the project, which will serve 500 families and is said to be reliable and replicable.
The project is the first demonstration project by the French agency in Northern Nigeria, and is a milestone in the use of renewable energy in the country.
Speaking while receiving the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Denys Gauer in his office, the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, described the project as a welcome development since many rural communities in the state were yet to be connected to the national power grid.
“Taking electricity to the villages is very expensive because they mostly consist of dispersed houses and are often very far from the main power source,” said the governor, expressing optimism that the solar power project would alleviate the suffering of the benefiting communities.
The governor also said his government was ready to work with the French agency in the management of waste in the state, in view of the potential of the sector to generate jobs for youth and create wealth.
