SUN AUG 25 2024-theGBJournal| The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) this week announced an upward review in the price of Nigerian passport effective from 1st September, 2024.

The fees of a 32-page passport booklet with 5-year validity, previously charged at N35,000 was hiked to N50,000, while the 64-page passport booklet will now cost N100,000, up from N70,000. The fees for obtaining the passport in Diaspora was left unchanged.

The NIS cited improving the quality and integrity of the passport as reasons for the increase.

However the NIS has since provided more excuses for the hike to include;

1-Improvement in passport standard and quality, ensuring that the Nigerian Passport continues to maintain the ICAO Standard.

2-To address cost of materials and production in view of current realities

3-With the new fees, the Nigeria Immigration (NIS) will create more passport front offices and biometric centres, thereby increasing access to NIS facilities, decongesting the already existing centres and improving passport production turnaround time.

It added that the recent increase in passport fees would also help the service actualize its drive for complete domestication of Nigerian passport booklets, in furtherance of the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu to build local content.
