SUN, 25 OCT, 2020-theGBJournal-The Six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton wore a t-shirt etched with the #EndSARS emblem, a symbol of the struggle of youths in Nigeria against police brutality, before putting on a stunning display of class driving at the Portuguese Grand Prix today to secure his 92nd win and erase Michael Schumacher’s long standing record of 91 wins.
The British driver had an awful start to the race, struggling to heat up his tyres after a few droplets of rain before turn 1. Valtteri Bottas, his team mate swept bye, followed by Carlos Sainz in the McLaren who astonishingly took the lead haven started seventh from the grid.
But Hamilton soon recovered his composure and began the recovery chase. Bottas soon ran into pace and tyre issues. Hamilton swooped and in a couple of corners later he was back into lead setting fastest time after fastest time.
66 laps later he was standing on the podium with mission accomplished after sharing a tight embrace with his father, Anthony Hamilton- a new Formula 1 record in total number of wins by any driver.
‘’I could never have dreamed of being where I am today,’’ he said, while relishing the moment.
He now leads the drivers’ Championship standing by 77 points at 258 points with five races to go. His closest rival and team mate Bottas is in second place with 197 followed by RedBull sensation Max Verstappen with 162 points.
