MON JUNE 24 2024-theGBJournal| BATURE brewery Black Gold Stout, Lagos Lager, Harmattan Haze and their seasonal beers are now considered fashionable in the bar and restaurant scene in Nigeria. These are carefully crafted offerings, inspired by people cheering.

Mangoes-The richness of the Nigerian ingredients

The naming of the products is closely tied to the ethos of the brand, which celebrates the richness of the Nigerian ingredients infused into the various beers- from Nigerian coffee beans, hibiscus, mangoes and sorghum.

Less than a decade since it was co-founded by Scottish born entrepreneur (in 2017) Kevin Conroy, Bature Brewery has shelves stacked with awards, the consequence of its pioneering range of craft beer using fresh ingredients and exciting beer styles.

The progress of Bature Brewery offerings is now being enthusiastically watched by conventional brewers, beer enthusiasts, and trend setters. And they have cause to.

The Lagos-based Bature brewery just entered its first international collaboration with south London-based Brixton Brewery, launching a vibrant new tropical beer named ‘Mangoes to Lagos’.

Having been in the vanguard of the craft beer market in Nigeria, experimenting with local flavours, spices and fruits, the brewery packed all of that experience into the collaboration and the new offering.

Bature’s connection with Brixton Brewery goes all the way back to sharing tips and ideas on starting a craft brewery. The connection was made even easier with Brixton’s huge West African community.

”So launching ‘Mangoes to Lagos” has allowed us to show our connection with arts, music and cultural scene as a cross reference with Lagos and Brixton,” says Bayo Ijasan, Head of Brewing, Bature Brewery.

Sourced directly from farms and markets in Lagos, Nigeria, the tropical pale ale features lashings of juicy, sweet mango, and represents a fusion between Bature Brewery’s seasonal sensation ‘Mango Disco juice’ and Brixton Brewery’s Mangoes to Brixton.

Both Brixton Brewery and Bature Brewery worked to blend Bature’s target flavor and Nigerian style with Brixton’s technical knowledge to ensure the brand ethos and their latest offering is in perfect harmony.

‘’We put our heads together and came up with an ambitious yet carefully calibrated recipe that has turned into a beautiful, balanced and supremely drinkable beer,” an excited Francesco Mayell, Co-Head Brewer, Brixton Brewery said of the collaboration.

Bature Brewery is currently expanding its production capacity and its public taproom with millions of dollars already committed, aiming to capture more widely distributed volume as its beer portfolio expands.

It is currently aiming at increasing its capacity above 50,000 litres per month, enlarge its taproom to accommodate at least 400 people, and sell more of its brew as draught beer.

The expansion reflects also the growing acceptance and demand for its product mix and premium, fresh and flavourful beer, and most importantly, the expansion is evidence of its commitment to Nigeria as a primary focus despite the country’s unique challenges.

”These challenges have been there and I think it can be overcome,” says one senior executive of the company.

Its collaboration with Brixton Brewery underscores the belief as it now has a vehicle to launch its footprint in the United Kingdom as well, while strengthening its footing in Nigeria-Africa’s fastest growing market for craft beer.
