TUE SEPT 10 2024-theGBJournal| Described as the worst in decades, Maiduguri came under intense flooding Monday night from the overflow of the Alau dam, situated in the Alau community of Konduga Local Government of Bornu State.
The Maiduguri flooding comes just five days after the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Bukar Tijani, gave assurances that the city of Maiduguri is safe despite the high water level.
Thousands of residents of the city were seen scampering to safety last night as fast flowing water from the dam swelled around their homes.
Last week when it became obvious the dam will overflow as water levels rose, the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, sent a high-powered delegation to assess the situation.
Alau Dam which has a reservoir capacity of 112 million cubic meters was designed to support irrigation activities on the Alau river bank that is also used to supply tap water in Maiduguri and Jere LGA.
Meanwhile, the entire neighborhoods around the river banks have been affected, with many residents unable to access their houses.
Some of the worst affected areas include Limanti Ward, Shehurri North Ward Kalari, Abbaganaram and Kawar Maila where many people have been rendered homeless.
Many critical infrastructure in Maiduguri have also been flushed underwater including the flyover in the city, the Palace of Shehu of Borno, the Central Jummat Mosque in Maiduguri, situated within the Shehu of Borno Palace, the Post office as well as the Teaching Hospital and environ.
