FRI SEPT 12 2025-theGBJournal| The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, chaired a meeting with the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) to review Nigeria’s silo concession program.
The program was introduced to address the government’s inability to utilize its silo complexes due to funding and operational constraints. However, the ICRC Director General, Dr. Jobson Oseodian Ewalefoh, noted that some concessionaires have failed to remit required returns, and abandoned silos will be retrieved by the government.
The Minister emphasized the need to revive silo storage facilities to reduce Nigeria’s massive post-harvest losses, estimated at $10 billion annually.
Currently, out of the 17 silo complexes concessioned to five private companies, only Flour Mills of Nigeria, which operates three silo complexes under three separate Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs), has met all conditions and is performing optimally.
The Ministry and ICRC will intensify oversight, enforce compliance, and ensure competent private operators manage silo facilities to ensure national food security, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agricultural transformation agenda.
