FRI 04 JUNE, 2021-theGBJournal- An announcement that may have surprised many both in Nigeria and outside including Twitter itself, the Federal Government said the suspension of the micoblogging and social networking sevice is indefinite.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja today, citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
Analysts say the suspension comes as a retaliatory measure following Twitter’s removal of a post by President Muhammad Buhari Thursday for ‘’violating its rules.’’ The President’s tweet is in reference to 1967-90 civil war, in which he promised to punish groups threatening the security of the country.
Lai Mohammed called the removal of the tweet ‘’unfair and double standard’’ saying that Twitter’s rule is not the universal rule
