SUN, SEPT 24 2023-theGBJournal |The Minister of Works, David Nweze Umahi says the Federal Government has shifted its focus towards reinforced concrete technology for future road construction across the country.’

”It is a proven and cost-effective method used successfully in countries like Singapore and India, and it offers advantages, especially in areas with high water tables, and its strength increases over time,” the Minister said.

The Minister made this known while visiting the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Her Excellency, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, at the Government House in Calabar after inspection of roads in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States weekend.

He noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to evidence-based decision-making and is determined to address the challenges facing the country with regards to poor road infrastructure.

”As the Minister for Works, I personally experienced the poor road conditions during a 14-hour journey from Abuja to Edo State. Despite these roads being awarded to contractors, maintenance has been lacking.

According the Minister, ”to rectify this, I have implemented several measures. Contractors without a Sheepsfoot rollers are not permitted to work, and we ensure that vehicles are allowed on the roads during various construction stages for proper compaction.”

In Cross River State, the Ministers said the Federal Government is working on projects such as the dualisation of Odukpani to Itu Road and the Odukpani Junction to Akpet Central—Ikom—Ogoja Road, ”with a commitment to using reinforced concrete technology. Governor Senator Prince Bassey Otu has embraced this vision and is collaborating with our team to ensure its success.”

”We believe that by enforcing responsibilities and embracing innovative construction methods, we can transform our infrastructure and build a stronger Nigeria,” he added.
