TUE, APRIL 30 2019-theG&BJournal- Bashir Ahmed, Personal Assistant on New Media to President Muhammadu twitted ‘’details soon from the ministry of Foreign Affairs,’’ after he broke the news that the ordeal of a Nigerian student, Zainab Habibu Aliyu, in the hands of Saudi Arabia authourities is over.
‘’The Federal Government has secured the release of Zainab Habibu Aliyu who was arrested in Saudi Arabia for alleged drug trafficking,’’ Ahmed in his tweet today that brought joy to Zainab’s family members.
Zainab, a student of Maitama Sule University, Kano, was arrested after a banned drug, Tramadol, was found in her bag. She was travelling in the company of her mother, Mrs. Maryam Aliyu, and sister, Hajara Aliyu from the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. She was arrested over allegations that a bag bearing her name tag contained the unlawful substance. She promptly denied knowledge of the substance.
President Buhari on Monday called on the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, to intervene in the case after the case was brought to his attention.
Experts say the speed of her release underscores the cordial and close diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.
