…A total of 1,680,315 voters are registered in the FCT- INEC
FRI FEB 20 2026-theGBJournal| Residents and businesses in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been caught off guard following the announcement of a near 24-hour restriction on movement ahead of Saturday’s Area Council elections.
The sweeping directive announced by FCT minister, Nyesom Wike late Thursday with the approval of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu- aimed at ensuring a smooth electoral process, effectively places parts of the nation’s capital under tight control for most of the day—triggering widespread reactions from commuters, traders, and service providers.
The restriction which declares today a ”Work Free Day”, introduced in coordination with security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is designed to curb potential electoral malpractice and maintain public order.
However, the duration and scope of the limitation have raised eyebrows, particularly among small business owners who depend on weekend traffic for sales. Many say Saturday represents one of their busiest trading periods, especially in markets, hospitality, logistics, and informal retail sectors.
For residents, the directive means significant adjustments to daily routines—from restricted inter-district travel to limited access to essential services. For businesses, especially those operating on slim margins, the measure could translate into lost revenue and disrupted supply chains.
While authorities insist the move is necessary to safeguard democracy at the grassroots level, its economic and social ripple effects are already shaping conversations across Abuja and the six Area Councils.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) across the six Area Councils of the FCT has recorded an impressive outcome.
”.As at the close of collection on the 10th of February, 2026, a total of 1,680,315 voters are registered in the FCT,” INEC said.
