MON FEB 02 2026-theGBJournal| Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said on Sunday it is shutting down the 47 years old Murtala Muhammed International Airport terminal 1 (MMIA) after a major electricity blackout disrupted activities at the terminal on Saturday.

FAAN has also ruled out installing ”permanent new or additional backup equipment at this time, as it prepares to shut down Terminal 1 in one month as part of the MMIA Rehabilitation and Expansion Project.”

FAAN action follows apologies offered passengers and stakeholders affected by the disruption, as well as the discomfort it caused.

”While we continue to implement measures to mitigate such events, Terminal 1 has long‑standing infrastructure limitations,” FAAN management said

”We appreciate your patience as we transition from stop‑gap solutions to lasting improvements. We remain committed to delivering a safer, more reliable passenger experience.”
