FRI 26 NOV, 2021-theGBJournal- The World Health Organisation (WHO), said today that it will take a while to understand the impact of the new variant but there is already a huge amount of pressure for the global health organisation to declare the new COVID-19 variant a ‘’major concern’’ amid a massive spike in case in European Union countries.

The WHO also is yet to name the variant but caution nations not to jump to conclusion too fast after the United Kingdom today shut its borders to flights from South Africa and neighbouring countries.

Many European Union countries are considering a blanket ban on flights from the region.

The EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen has called for drastic action, calling on member countries to suspend all air travel to countries with cases of the new COVID Variant on fears that the variant could be more transmissible than the Delta Variant.

She said they are taking the news very seriously and that travels from six African countries be suspended ‘’until we have a clear understanding about the dangers posed by this new variant.’’

She said scientists and vaccine manufactures fully supports ‘’such precautionary measures to avoid spreading of this concerning variant.’’

Belgium became the first European Union country to announce the appearance of the variant on its shores.

Scientists say they are worried about the variant because it is different from those that have emerged in recent times and available COVID-19 vaccines may not be as effective because of its high mutation level.
