MON DEC 01 2025-theGBJournal| European lawmakers have voted to block 150 million euro in funding to Tanzania over human rights violations.

The lawmakers also voted to consider the imposition of sanctions on politicians from the East African country embroiled in election related violence since the October 29 2025, presidential and National Assembly elections.

Sources in Tanzania told the UN Human Rights Office shortly after the elections, that hundreds of protesters and other people were killed and an unknown number injured or detained.

The Office said however that, it has been unable to independently verify the casualty figures owing to the volatile security situation and the Internet shutdown which followed the vote.

The country is braced for a nationwide protest scheduled for December 9, that potentially could explode into violence again.

Against the backdrop of the protest, the United States Embassy Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, warned travelers to Tanzania over the next several weeks to be prepared for potential disruptions, including the possibility of unrest, nation-wide curfews, an internet blackout, cancellation of ferries to Zanzibar, cancellation of international flights, and roadblocks enacted to enforce strict movement controls.

The US Embassy noted that recent unrest around Tanzania’s October 29 elections resulted in destruction of public infrastructure, violence against civilians, internet shutdowns, and major travel disruptions.

”Following recent unrest, foreign nationals have experienced increased attention from local security authorities, and security forces have searched electronics for evidence of connection to unrest or politically sensitive content.

Police have reminded the public that under Tanzanian law, the sharing of pictures or videos that may cause panic is a criminal offense. There are reports of security authorities searching electronic devices for politically sensitive content.

The Embassy’s ability to assist travelers in danger is further limited during a period of unrest.
