The Enugu State Government has released N100 million to its water corporation to sustain the provision of potable water in Enugu and Nsukka, state commissioner for water resources said on Saturday.
The Commissioner, Charles Egumgbe, said that the money was to be used to carry out repair and maintenance of broken down facilities in the two water schemes.
The commissioner said the action was to ensure that majority of the state’s residents had affordable potable water.
He said that availability of water would also facilitate better sanitation and hygiene in the state.
“This move will ultimately increase the health status of our people.
“It will go a long way to eliminate water and air-borne diseases while increasing household and state economic levels,’’ Egumgbe added.
He said the state government was ready to partner with private investors at any point along the water supply chain, which included water production and reticulation.
The state government had earmarked N661million in its 2016 budget for the water ministry and the agencies under it.
The government said this was to expand its water supply project to both urban and rural areas.
Enugu, with a population of more than two million residents, needs a minimum of 150,000 cubic litres of water daily.
