WED AUG 28 2024-theGBJournal|Amnesty International has called on the Federal Government to immediately release dozens of minors it says were unlawfully detained nationwide for simply participating in the #EndBadGovernance protest between 1-10 August.
According to Human Rights advocacy group, 22 minors face dreadful 60 days behind bars in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), without safeguards for their rights.
In Katsina, 12 children under 16-years are now facing an ”unfair trial.”
Amnesty says, the children with their whole lives ahead of them are now at risk of being tried on trumped up charges.
”Our findings since the 1-10 August #EndBadGovernance protests show safety concerns arising from authorities’ treatment of children during arrest and in detention, as wells as total denial of their legal legal rights.
The Nigerian authorities must release them immediately,” Amnesty said in a statement Tuesday.
