FRI, MAY 03 2019-theG&BJournal- The Emir of Kano and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Lamido Sanusi has been appointed into the board of MTN Group Ltd as a non-executive director.
His appointment is part of a major management shakeup that also saw the exit of the chairman, Phuthuma Nhleko who will be stepping down finally in December 2019 after almost 20 years. Nhleko will be replaced as chairman by former South Africa deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jones whose appointment to the board was announced alongside Lamido’s.
The Africa telecoms giant is in the final phase of its planned listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and industry watchers say Sanusi’s appointment points to an accelerated move towards the company’s listing, which is also part of the condition of the settlement in the dispute the company had with the Nigerian regulators who had imposed a $1 billion fine for FX infractions.
