TUE, JUNE 18 2019-theG&BJournal-Representatives of the EITI community, the global standard for the good governance of oil, gas and mineral resources are gathered in Paris today for the #EITI2019 Global Conference. Conference participants arrived Paris, France yesterday ahead of the Conference proper for the 43rd EITI Board meeting.
The Board Meeting was the final meeting of the 2016-2019 EITI Board, chaired by Fredrik Reinfeldt. At the meeting, the Board affirmed the approval of the 2019 EITI Standard that will be formally launched today.
According to the EITI, the Board also discussed a number of implementation challenges, including funding EITI implementation and assessing progress in beneficial ownership disclosure. It also discussed the EITI International Secretariat’s statement on Senegal and the need for a wider discussion about the EITI’s role in fighting corruption before taking a Validation decisions on Albania, Mali, Peru and Sierra Leone.
The EITI put a statement on the eve of the conference to address worldwide trust in government which it says is under strain. It said a perceived lack of progress in tackling corruption, tax evasion and illicit financial flows are contributing to the rise of populism and economic nationalism. The impact of the oil, gas and mining industries is often a focal point of public concern and potential source of conflict.
‘’As a high-level forum on extractives governance, the EITI Global Conference provides a unique opportunity to reinforce the importance of multi-stakeholder dialogue and openness in addressing these challenges,’’ it said.
