Education Minister orders closure of Nigerian universities on security concerns during election

THUR. 09 FEB, 2023-theGBJournal| The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu has directed that all Nigerian universities and inter university centres be shut down and academic activities be suspended between 22nd and 14th March 2023.

The National University Commission (NUC), in a letter dated February 3, had reminded the Vice-Chancellors and Directors/Chief Executives of inter-university centres of the 2023 General Elections scheduled to hold on Saturday 25th February, for the Presidential and National Assembly, and Saturday 11th March 2023 for Gubernatorial and State House of Assembly respectively.

‘’In view of the foregoing and concerns expressed on the security if staff, students and properties of our respective institutions, the Honourable Minister of Education, Mal. Adamu Adamu, has following extensive consultations with relevant security agencies, directed that all Universities and Inter University Centres be shut down and academic activities be suspended between 22nd February and 14th March, 2023,’’ the NUC said in the letter conveying the directive, released today.

The directive is to be implemented by Vice-Chancellors, as well as Directors/Chief Executives of inter-university centres.
