…Angry youths burn bank in Warri, Delta State
WED. 15 FEB, 2023-theGBJournal| Nigeria’s Supreme Court today adjourned till February 22, 2023 to hear the case brought by some State Governments against the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Naira swap policy, even as protests rage across the country over the controversial policy.
Seven additional States joined the suit, bringing the total number of States to 10 in the consolidated suit.
The Court was filled to capacity before the hearing began with a retinue of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) and legal practitioners. The Governors of Kogi and Kaduna were in the court for the hearing of the substantive suit.
At the last hearing hearing, the Court had temporarily banned the implementation of the February 10 deadline of the CBN which would have made the N200, N500 and N1000 Naira notes illegal tender.
Zamfara, Kogi and Kaduna States instituted the suit initially against the CBN. Niger, Kano, Ekiti, Lagos and Ondo later applied to join the suit against the CBN and the Federal Government.
In another twist to the case, Edo and Bayelsa States have applied to be joined as respondents on the side of the Federal Government.
Meanwhile, protests have broken out across the country over the policy which has left many confused on whether to continue with use of the old and notes. The latest being in Ibadan, Oyo State and Warri in Delta State where protesters barricaded roads.
At Bodija, Ibadan, angry protesters were seen at Polaris Bank branch scaling the wall and breaking through the fence to access the bank because it refused to dispense money to customers.
In Warri, a bank’s branch (names withheld) was seen by correspondent up in flames as angry customer attacked the bank in early hours of today. Bill Boards of a Political party was also angrily destroyed as protest spread across the city.
