SAT, AUG 22 2020-theG&BJournal– Former Nigerian President and ECOWAS Special Envoy to the Republic Mali, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan today arrived Bamako to continue with peace and mediation talks towards resolving the country’s political impasse after a military coup sacked President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
The Special envoy is seeking to find solution to the crisis that has enveloped the country since the coup and help mediate the restoration of normalcy.
‘’We will continue to engage Malian stakeholders until lasting peace is found,’’ the ex-President said.
Ebele Jonathan was appointed ECOWAS’ Special Envoy to Mali in July as the country’s political tussle deteriorated, to help mediate the tension. His aides say he will be meeting key stakeholders in the dispute on the trip, including some members of the ousted President’s cabinet.
Col. Assimi Goita named himself Mali’s new leader Wednesday after the coup led by 25 year old Col. Malik Diaw. The coup leaders promised a fresh election within ‘’reasonable’’ time.
The international community has since condemned the coup with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari calling for restoration of constitutional authority in the country.
