TUE, FEBRUARY 26 2019-theG&BJournal-The EBRD has appointed Beata Javorcik as its new Chief Economist. She will join the Bank on 1 September 2019 and succeed the current office holder, Sergei Guriev.
Ms Javorcik currently holds a Statutory Professorship in Economics at the University of Oxford, the first woman in this position. She is a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a managing editor of the academic quarterly Economic Policy. Ms Javorcik is a member of the Royal Economic Society’s Executive Committee and is a Director of the International Trade Programme at the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale and is a Polish national.
EBRD President Suma Chakrabarti said: “I know that Beata Javorcik will make a huge contribution to the Bank’s work. As Chief Economist she will help to drive the positive impact that the EBRD makes in the countries where it invests in improving lives.”
Ms Javorcik added: “I am very excited to take up this fascinating position at the EBRD. It will provide me with the unique opportunity to participate in the work of this important institution. My research explores how transition economies and developing countries can harness globalisation to stimulate economic growth. As EBRD Chief Economist I look forward to making a concrete contribution for the benefit of the Bank’s countries of operations.”
Before taking up her position at Oxford University, Ms Javorcik worked at the World Bank in Washington DC, where she focused on research, lending operations and policy advice. She also knows the EBRD well as she was involved in the 2016 review of the Bank’s transition concept, which guides its operations, and has participated in EBRD Annual Meetings and launches of the Transition Report, the Bank’s flagship publication on economics.
The incumbent Chief Economist Sergei Guriev will return to his previous position as Professor of Economics at Sciences Po in Paris. He has been EBRD Chief Economist since January 2016.- EBRD
