Excessive androgen in women can manifest in many ways, the most common and recognizable symptoms are acne, hirsutism (excessive facial and body hair), masculine features and menstrual irregularities.
In 2015, acne ranked 8th in the list of most prevalent diseases in the world, with a global prevalence of 645 million people. Approximately 80% of women in Nigeria are affected by acne between the onset of puberty and 30 years of age. Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition with multifactorial pathogenesis, but the source is excess androgen levels in women which triggers the onset of this condition.
