MON, JUNE 24 2019-theG&BJournal-DKT Nigeria is sets to launch Caya diaphragm, a reusable and hormone-free female barrier contraceptive. Caya Diaphragm is a woman-controlled, natural and safe device that helps to address the unmet contraceptive needs of millions of women. The regulatory approval of the Caya diaphragm opens access to a new self-care contraceptive option for women in Nigeria.
DKT International Nigeria is the largest family planning and reproductive health product and services provider in Nigeria with a large product portfolio.
In 2018, DKT Nigeria sold over 76 million condoms, 100,000 IUDs, 4.3 million cycles of daily oral contraceptives pills, 1 million emergency contraceptive pills (EC), 375,000 injectables (DMPA-SC), 8 million Misoprostol tablets, 36,000 Implants and 13,500 MVA kits. The firm is now adding Caya contoured diaphragm to her products’ portfolio.
Caya diaphragm is designed to fit a broad range of women including women who can’t or don’t want to use hormonal method, breastfeeding mothers and those who want contraception only when necessary.
Dimos Sakellaridis, Country Director of DKT Nigeria, said that DKT will continue to be at the fore front of introducing and making readily available innovative contraceptives and reproductive health products to women in Nigeria.
‘’It is our mission to provide women and men with more effective, safe, affordable and quality contraceptive options that suit their lifestyle.’’
On June 3, 2019, at the Women Deliver Conference, PATH announced that the Nigerian National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control recently approved the Caya® contoured diaphragm and Caya® Gel for marketing, making this non hormonal family planning method choice available for women in Nigeria for the first time.
PATH manufactures the Caya contoured diaphragm and will provide technical assistance to DKT Nigeria for introduction.
Approximately 7 million women in Nigeria want to avoid a pregnancy, but are not using any contraception, and worldwide more than 200 million women are considered to have an unmet need for contraception.
The single-size Caya diaphragm addresses several of the reasons commonly cited for unmet contraceptive need. It is a vaginal barrier contraceptive that is woman controlled, non hormonal, and appropriate for women who cannot or do not want to use hormonal contraceptive methods, intrauterine devices, or condoms.
Caya diaphragm was developed through a human-centered design process to expand women’s access to affordable, non hormonal contraceptive options in low-income countries where there is an unmet need for contraception—and where diaphragms have not been available in recent decades.
According to Maggie Kilbourne-Brook, PATH Caya diaphragm product manager, “Listening to input from women, their partners, and providers from around the world resulted in a unique, single-size, anatomical design that is easy for clinicians to provide.”
She added: “Studies have demonstrated that it is comfortable, safe, and easy for women to use. I am thrilled to see this innovation scale up and provide greater reproductive health freedom to women.”
