Delta State governor Okowa seeks partnership with Reforms and Decongestion committee for prisons reform

MON, MARCH 18 2019-theG&BJournal-DELTA State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa told members of the Presidential Committee on Prison Reforms and Decongestion led by its Chairman, Justice I. U. Bello that the Delta State government is willing to partner with the committee to make reforms that will create a conducive environment for the inmates.

‘’The crime rate in the country is growing daily and the prison facilities are not improving,’’ he told the committee members who were on a courtesy visit in Asaba, Delta State capital today.

Okowa said the skill acquisition under his administration’s SMART AGENDA has been successful ‘’and as a state, we are extending the programme to the prisons to equip the inmates with skills, as well as provide funds to enable them start their own businesses and be useful members to the society.’’

“We need to reform the mind of the prisoners; a programme to reform the mind of prisoners is very important because once you are able to reform their mind, they will become better citizens,” Governor Okowa said.

Governor Okowa commended the setting up of committee for prison reforms stating that the committee has to work fast.

The governor also, advocated abolition of death penalties and commute those who are already sentenced to death to life imprisonment as most state governments was  unwilling to sign the death warrant.

Earlier, Justice Bello had told the governor that they were in Delta State as part of activities to reform the Nigerian Prison Service. The Committee has so far visited 13 states in country.
