WED, JUN 03 2020-theG&BJournal- Amnesty International Nigeria have called on the Federal Government to declare a ‘’national crisis on rape’’ amid the raging anger on the rape of 18-year-old Nigerian Student in Ibadan, Oyo State and the rape and murder of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa in a church in Benin City, Edo State.
‘’This toxic culture that encourages men to view women as passive sex objects needs to be addressed,’’ Amnesty International said.
Amnesty criticized the Federal Government’s response to issues of rape as ‘’woefully inadequate’’.
‘’Frequent reports of rape across Nigeria is a gruesome reminder of the violence women and girls face,’’ Amnesty International Nigeria twitted Wednesday. ‘’Women and girls safety should be paramount.’’
Amnesty noted that violence against women and girls are often not properly registered or investigated while conviction rates for rape are very low.
Osai Ojigho, the director for Amnesty International in Nigeria Tuesday told theGuardian UK ‘’the horrific incident resonates because even in spaces that women and girls should be safest from gender-based violence, the home, the schools and now places of worship, it is getting there.’’
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) M.A Adamu, Tuesday ordered strengthening of the gender-based unit of the force following the intensity of the outcry on Omozuwa’s death.
He directed the immediate transfer of the on-going investigations into her death to the Force headquarters in Abuja from the Edo State Police headquarters.
