…Ramaphosa was re-elected with 283 votes to see off the challenge of Malema who secured 44 votes.
SAT JUNE 15 2024-theGBJournal| Cyril Ramaphosa has been re-elected for a second term as President of South Africa, beating the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema after the country’s new-constituted National Assembly members vote late on Friday night.
Ramaphosa was re-elected with 283 votes to see off the challenge of Malema who secured 44 votes.
His re-election, during the first sitting of the 7th Parliament, also follows a coalition deal between his party, the African National Congress (ANC), the centre-right Democratic Alliance (DA) and smaller opposition parties.
The ANC lost its parliamentary majority for the first time in 30 years in the recent general election, securing 40% of the vote while the DA become the second biggest party in the country after it secured 22% of the vote.
Ramaphosa will be inaugurated during a ceremony next Wednesday at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, in accordance to the country’s constitution.
Members of the DA are expected to be included in cabinet positions once he assumes office.
”I wish to state very clearly this is not a grand coalition of two or three parties. It is a government of national unity that we are constituting, and we’ve been here before,” Ramaphosa said in his acceptance speech.
