WED, APRIL 01 2020-theG&BJournal-UEFA today suspended the Champions League, Europa League and Euro 2020 play offs indefinitely amid coronavirus outbreak.
UEFA also announced the cancellation of the European Under-17 finals scheduled for May 2020 as well as the European Women’s Under-19 finals scheduled for July 2020.
UEFA said that the deadline related to all 2020/21 UEFA club competitions are postponed until further notice, in particular as regards the admission process and registration of players.
The European football governing body said it will set new deadlines in due course.
The decisions followed a video conference meeting with the general secretaries of all 55 UEFA member associations and recommendations made by the working groups created on 17 March.
Meanwhile, organizers of the All England Lawn Tennis Championship, (AELTC or Wimbledon) today cancelled the 2020 Wimbledon ‘’due to public health concerns linked to the coronavirus epidemic.’’
‘’The 134th Championships will now be staged from 28 June to July 21 2021,’’ organizers said.
Ian Hewitt, the AELTC Chairman said in a statement issued, ‘’we believed, given the measure of the global crisis, that it is ultimately the right decision to cancel The Championships 2020 and instead concentrate on how we can use the breadth of our resources to help those in our local communities and beyond.’’
He said those who paid for a ticket in the Wimbledon Public Ballot for this year’s Championships will have the choice to purchase a pair of tickets to the Championships 2021 for the same day and court.
