MON, MAY 18 2020-theG&BJournal- sixty-two countries and the entire EU have joined to push an independent probe of the actions of the World Health Organisation, the international response to the disease and the origin of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic which has killed 313, 713 people globally.
A vote for the probe will be put to the WHO Assembly Tuesday. The WHO Assembly which meets once a year in Geneva, Switzerland is made up of 194 countries.
The countries will present a motion to review experience gained and lessons learned from WHO-coordinated international health response to the pandemic, the effectiveness of the mechanisms at WHO disposal, and the actions of WHO and their timelines pertaining to the coronavirus pandemic.
The US President Donald Trump in April temporarily withdrew funding for the world health body blaming it for inadequately handling the spread of the virus. Trump has also consistently blamed China for the hundreds of thousands of deaths across the globe for failing to reveal the severity of disease before it spread and costing nations vital weeks of preparation.
Scientists are yet to determine the origin of the pandemic, but still strongly believe that it originated from bats and infected intermediary species before infecting humans at the Wuhan wet market where all sorts of animals are slaughtered and sold.
Meanwhile, 338 new confirmed cases, the biggest one day jump to date. 6 deaths were recorded in Nigeria On the 17th of May 2020, according to the latest data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). No new state reported a case in the last 24 hours. 5959 cases in total have so far been confirmed, 1594 cases have been discharged and 182 deaths have been recorded in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory
The 338 new cases are reported from 18 states- Lagos (177), Kano(64), FCT(21), Rivers(16), Plateau(14), Oyo(11), Katsina(9), Jigawa(4), Kaduna(4), Abia (3), Bauchi(3), Borno (3),Gombe (2), Akwa Ibom (2), Delta(2), Ondo (1), Kebbi (1), Sokoto (1)
