COVID-19 updates: 61 individuals under supervised isolation by states in Nigeria, 57,444 are known to have recovered globally and 20 vaccines are in development

    SAT, MARCH 07 2020-theG&BJournal- Nigeria’s Minister of Health Dr E.O Ehanire disclosed Friday that 61 individuals are currently under supervised isolation by states and 55 passengers from a flight into the country are being monitored by the Nigeria Centre for Disease control (NCDC) and Port Health Services for symptoms of possible appearance of COVID-19.
    The Minister of Health, who welcomed the WHO Nigeria country officer Dr Clement Peter, said that as of March 6, there only 21 suspected cases of COVID-19 across Lagos, Ogun, Kano and FCT.  ‘’Only 1 case has tested positive.’’
    Meanwhile, more countries continued to report confirmed cases with total global now 101,469. 3,491 deaths have been recorded. The good news is that more afflicted patients are reported to have recovered, suggesting that the proactive measures put in place by most countries with high incidence of cases are proving effective. As of 7 March 57,444 are known to have recovered.
    The latest high profile victim is the Iranian politician and newly elected conservative, Fatemeh Rahbar who is reported to have died of coronavirus. Iran has reported 1,576 new cases and 21 new deaths from coronavirus in the past 24 hours.
    Egypt, Friday reported 12 new cases on a Nile cruise ship and cases in the UK have risen to 163. A total of 20,338 people have been tested in the country so far.
    The WHO said Friday, that it has so far received applications for review and approval of 40 diagnostic tests.
    WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebre said 20 vaccines are in development and many clinical trials of therapeutics are underway.
    ‘’Even as we test therapeutics, we need to ensure that supplies of those medicines are available should they prove effective’’, he said, adding that WHO has been monitoring the potential risk of a disruption to medicines supplies as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic.’’
    ‘’We encourage every country to review WHO’s disease commodity package for COVID to ensure it has the supplies it needs, including protective equipment and medical devices.’’
