…Ghana extends lockdown
…566 confirmed cases to date

MON, APRIL 13 2020-theG&BJournal- Six Nigerians travelling to Accra, Ghana arrested by Ghana health officials recently, have all tested positive for the coronavirus ( COVID-19) disease.
The six Nigerians were detained after they tried to enter the country illegally near the Aflao border through unapproved routes shortly after the country announced border closure following the pandemic outbreak.
They were quarantined immediately after their arrest and their results came out Sunday positive.
President Akufo Addo have announced an extension of the lockdown which has been in place since the cases in the country started mounting. The restriction imposed on public gatherings, under E1 64 and E1 65 has been extended for a further period of two weeks, with effect from today, Monday April 13 2020. The restrictions imposed on movement affects residents in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa.
Confirmed cases rose dramatically in Eastern Region to 16 raising concern among citizens that the COVID-19 is getting out of hands. Six cases also have been reported in the Volta Region. Among them is a pregnant woman who was recently transferred to the Volta from Accra to deliver her baby.
As at Sunday April 12, 2020, Ghana has reported a total of 566 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, 8 deaths according to the Ministry of Information.
Meanwhile, the country announced Sunday that scientists at Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) at the University of Ghana have successfully found the sequenced genomes of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the global COVID-19 pandemic.
‘’This is a major contribution to science in the fight against COVID-19 and something for which all Ghanaian should be proud of,’’ says Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana Vice President.
