FRI, MAY 01 2020-theG&BJournal- The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha has told Nigerians to prepare to take responsibility for their actions if they refuse to discipline themselves and adhere to all the social distancing guidelines put in place by Federal Government health agencies.
‘’I would remind us again and again that the time for personal responsibility is now and we better own up to this-that we have a part to play as individuals and collectively as a people to ensure that we do everything possible to flatten the curve and begin to see a decrease in the levels of infection,’’ he said during the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing today.
He recalled the history of the spread of the infection to underscore the severity of the disease which is now projected to be with humans for as long as 2 years from now.
On the 30th of January 2020 when the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared COVID-19 as a major health challenge of international concern we had 7,818 infections globally out of which 7,736 were in China. Only 82 were outside China and these 82 were in 18 countries. Three months after, the record globally is about 3.3 million infections in 213 countries and territories with infections.
‘’I am painting this picture so that we can understand the magnitude of the problem we are dealing with.
‘’Going forward as a country and as a people we must challenge ourselves to do everything humanly possible to ensure that we apply ourselves in spite of the inconveniences to do what is needful to reduce the level of our infection, flatten the curve and begin to see decrease of the infection.
As of today, the country have only two states that have not reported coronavirus, it means that if we are not careful and with the picture I see internationally, if it is what would apply here in Nigeria, then we must be prepared.’’
