FRI, APRIL 10 2020-theG&BJournal- The reported number of new cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) diseases in Nigeria were limited to just two states for the first time since the outbreak, and comes as an encouragement to most Nigerians anxious to see the end of the pandemic.
Most of the people who spoke to theG&BJournal say the low number of confirmed cases and limited states suggests that the border controls and the partial lockdown imposed by most of the states are effective enough to slow down the spread of the deadly virus.
Fourteen new cases were reported Thursday nationwide, and limited to just Lagos, and Delta State where government officials expressed shock and had to explain the health history of the patient who incidentally died after his visit to Lagos. The total number of new cases is now 288. 51 have been discharged-majority from Lagos were 7 patients were discharged Thursday. 7 deaths in total have been reported.
Experts tell theG&BJournal that they have no doubt in their minds that the Lagos cases resulted from community transmission, which is why it is important to continue to monitor and enforce all the rules regarding the lockdown in the state until it is safe to unlock.
Already condemnations are pouring in for a number of states that have announced relaxation of their social distancing advisory for Easter and Jumat. Jimi Abgaje, politician and technocrat said Thursday on his twitter handle that it will be counter-productive and could reverse the gains achieved thus far in stemming the tide of the pandemic.
