TUE, APRIL 07 2020-theG&BJournal- The report of the number of confirmed cases in Nigeria is ticking up rapidly after a slow start and health officials are beginning to vividly twitch given the changing profile of the coronavirus transmission, another suggestion that Nigeria has entered the critical phase of the virus crisis.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Health Prof. Akin Abayomi gave a graphic account of the emerging trend that could explode anytime with grave consequences and warned that there is now more local transmission going on.

‘’The important message is that local transmission is now happening in Lagos State and the sooner we know about cases in the community or what we define as red flags, the sooner we can come to test you or if you are unwell, the sooner we can come to admit you into one of the facilities,’’ Prof. Abayomi said Monday during his briefing on COVID-19 in Lagos.
At the end of week 4, majority of cases or 82%, had a travel history while 18% had no travel history. As at the end of last week, the number of cases without a travel history has increased from 18% to 45%.
‘’Importation of cases will no longer happen through international flights but it may happen through marine vessels or through our land borders with neighbouring countries or through interstate,’’
So far 93% of cases are Nigerians and 7% foreign nationals and most of the cases are between the ages of 20 and 60. We have seen very few cases above the age of 60 and we have only seen one case below the age of ten. 67% of the cases are male and 33% are female.’’
The confirmed cases in the country went up by six Monday to take the total to 238 according to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) latest update. And for the first time since the disease made shore in Nigeria, no new case is reported in Lagos but the number of cases in the state is still the highest at 120 followed by the Federal Capital Territory with 48 confirmed cases. 35 patients have been discharged while death is still at 5.
