FRI, APRIL 24 2020-theG&BJournal- Britain launched the first coronavirus vaccine test Thursday in healthy volunteers, the beginning of a study to determine if the vaccine is safe and works.
According to report by Associated Press (AP), University of Oxford researchers created the new vaccine by inserting genes for a spikey protein that studs the outer surface of the new coronavirus into another, harmless virus.
The idea is for the immune system to spot the foreign protein and make anti-bodies to fight it, primed to react quickly if the person is eventually exposed to COVID-19.
The new vaccine developed under three months were administered to 800 volunteers and the UK Daily Mail reports UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock has insisted that Britons will be the first in the queue for any successful UK-developed vaccine from the 42 million pounds programmes.
The new vaccine trial news comes as Nigeria announced Coronavirus victims’ cases have reached 981 and 31 fatalities.
Another 108 people tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hours in eight States. The number of discharged cases stagnated at 197. 582 confirmed cases have now been reported in Lagos and 133 in FCT-two of the hardest hit areas of the country. Seventy percent  of the affected are male and the most affected age group are those between the ages of 31-40 (21%).
