THUR, AUG 20 2020-theG&BJournal– 50,488 Nigerians have coronavirus after the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 593 new cases on Wednesday. 4 more people died from the virus, keeping with the extremely low death rate in the country since the virus landed in Nigeria. In all 985 fatalities have been recorded and it has taken close to six months to get the level, against all projections.
The NCDC figure shows 37, 304 cases have been discharged.
New cases were confirmed in 16 States with Plateau State reporting 186 confirmed cases from a low of 21 on Tuesday. The number is attributed to increased number of testing conducted.
Confirmed cases dropped in Lagos to 172 from Tuesday’s high of 210 while cases in FCT rose to 62 from 45 reported on Tuesday, reflecting the unpredictable trend seen in the past two weeks.
The NCDC had explained the inconsistent pattern to the difficulties in collating results and the refusal of Nigerians to come forward for testing.
Delta State reported 25 new cases after it came clean on Tuesday with no case while Rivers reported 20 new case as against 33 the previous day.
Other States reporting new cases are Ondo (19), Edo (18), Kaduna (17), Enugu (12), Akwa Ibom (10), Ogun (7), Abia (6), Gombe (6), Kano (3) and Osun (3).
Overall, 363,331 samples have been tested nationwide, reflecting the low level of test conducted so far.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Africa region has reported over 1.1 million confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent, with more than 846,000 recoveries and more than 25,000 deaths cumulatively.
