FRI, JUN 19 2020-theG&BJournal-Nigeria has recorded its highest number of new coronavirus cases in a single day, and in more states in Nigeria with Oyo State topping the list in latest count, besides Lagos, with 103 confirmed cases.
The total number of new COVID-19 cases surged to 745 on Thursday, bringing total coronavirus infections in Nigeria to 18, 480, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) data.
More states are hurling in record number of new cases rapidly and many are easily surpassing their previous one-day record.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha Thursday warned during the daily COVID-19 briefing that the country is yet to see its worst days.
‘’I want everybody to understand that we are not out of the wood yet,’’ he said while admonishing the casual take of Nigerians on the disease that has so far killed 475 across the country. ‘’People go about their businesses as if there is nothing to dread. There is so much to dread. The statistics you see and hear of on a daily basis are not just numbers, you can place names and faces to them,’’ he said.
The total number of active cases paints the grim picture of the struggle states face with bed space-11, 698 very sick patients.
Three states-Oyo, Rivers and Edo have all surpassed the 700 mark in total number of infections. All have double the number of fatalities they had a week ago. And at least, 30 states have run out of bed spaces, and ‘’there are more difficulties ahead’’ says Mustapha. ‘’We are not done with the first wave of the infection, and we have not even peaked. There is so much to do.’’
According to the NCDC, the 745 new cases were reported from 21 states. Lagos led the count with 280 new confirmed cases to bring its total count to 7,896. Oyo reported 103 new cases and have a total of 764 confirmed cases. Ebonyi state has gradually climbed the ladder with total cases now 234, FCT has a new total of 1451 including the 60 reported for Thursday and Kano’s total number of infected patients is now 1,170. These are the hot spots of the disease in the country.
The other states reporting new one-day (Thursday) high of infection are Imo 46, Edo-34, Delta-33), Rivers-25, Kaduna-23, Ondo-16, Katsina-12, Kano-10, Bauchi-8, Borno-7, Kwara-5, Gombe-4, Sokoto-2, Enugu-2, Yobe-1, Osun-1 and Nasarawa-1
