Covid-19 Nigeria: Resumption of inter-state travel confirmed as cases spike to 16658 nationwide

TUE, JUN 16 2020-theG&BJournal-Rivers State has recorded 103 new locally transmitted coronavirus, the highest single-day tally in since the pandemic outbreak. The State had previously seen cases in trickle of 20s. The haul takes the State’s total of confirmed cases to 592.
Oyo and Edo States also saw spike in cases, 68 and 40 one-day total respectively. The spike reflects the quickening spread of the disease in more states of the federation amid ease of lockdown.
The total confirmed cases nationwide as at Monday June 15 2020 is now 16,658, according to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). The total number of deaths also inched up to 424 while a total of 5349 patients have so far been discharged but active cases remains high, now 10,885 in total while 94,323 samples have been tested nationwide.
According to the NCDC, the 573 new cases are reported from 20 states Lagos(216), Rivers(103), Oyo(68), Edo(40), Kano(21), Gombe(20),FCT(17), Delta(13), Plateau(12), Bauchi(12), Niger(10),Kebbi(9) Ogun(8), Ondo(8), Abia(7), Nasarawa(5), Borno(1), Kwara(1), Benue(1), and Anambra (1).
Meanwhile, The Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Sani Aliyu Monday during the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing in Abuja, confirmed that the ban on inter-state travel will be rescinded once the local airline begins operation.
He was explaining the inclusion of railways travel as part of the mode of transportation to resume operation once local airlines resume.
He said the PTF will be reviewing the restrictions on inter-state travel which is very likely to be rescinded, and will be working very closely with the transporter to make sure that the necessary health guidelines are in place like wearing masks, restricting the number of passengers in a vehicle and measuring temperature.
‘’But we will make sure that they are ready when we blow the whistle,’’ he added.
The local airlines are scheduled to resume flight operations on June 21 2020.
