COVID-19: Nigeria records 917 new cases of Coronavirus, the biggest one-day haul attributed to Yuletide celebrations

MON 04 JAN, 2021-theGBJournal- 917 new coronavirus cases have been recorded in Nigeria, the biggest one day haul since the pandemic made landfall in the country in February 2020. The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) also reported 9 new deaths to take total number of fatalities as of 3 January, 2021 to 1311 while 75, 044 are reported discharged, including 59 community recoveries in Lagos State managed in line with guidelines.

The close to 1000 new cases underscores the relentless spread of the virus in Nigeria, and health expats tell theGBJournal that the huge number of new cases may have been holiday induced as many carriers of the virus may have distributed it in their various communities during the yuletide celebrations.

The Federal Capital Territory reported the highest number of new cases with 222 confirmed infections. Lagos, still the epicentre recorded 214 confirmed new cases while Kaduna State reported 119 new cases.

In all, 16 States and the FCT reported new cases including Plateau State-92, Nasarawa-50, Oyo-41, Adamawa-33, Ondo-32, Abia-28, Ogun-19, Rivers17, Kano-16, Yobe-14, Edo-8, Anambra-6. Ekiti-5 and Jigawa State reporting one new case.
