Covid-19 Nigeria: Record total of 20,244 cases on a day WHO reported largest one day increase worldwide

MON, JUN 22 2020-theG&BJournal-The number of patients infected with the coronavirus in Lagos is nearly half the nationwide total.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) data for Sunday-21st of June 2020- showed an increase of another 436 new cases, smaller than the previous day’s number of 661 but large enough to take Nigeria’s total of coronavirus cases to 20, 244.
Confirmed cases in Lagos now totals 8,407. FCT and Kano are still gathering infections but at a slower pace than expected. Both States are currently on 1549 and 1184 confirmed cases in total respectively. Rivers is the fourth most infected state with 866 followed by Oyo with 860.
A total of 113,575 of samples have been tested to date. Active cases are 12,847 and deaths totals 518 nationwide.
According to the NCDC, the 436 new cases are reported from 19 states- Lagos -169, Oyo- 52, Plateau-31, Imo -29, Kaduna -28, Ogun -23, FCT -18, Enugu-18, Bauchi-17, Bayelsa-14, Rivers-8, Osun-6, Kano-6, Edo-5, Benue-5, Adamawa-3, Borno-2, Abia-1, Ekiti-1.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization on Sunday reported the largest single day increase in coronavirus by count, at 183, 020 new cases in the last 24 hours. The largest single day total by country is led by Brazil with 54,771. The US came in at 36,617 new cases behind Brazil while India recorded 15,400.
Cases are still spiraling in South Africa. The country is Africa’s runaway case with a total of 92,681 confirmed cases and 1,877 deaths. In North Africa, Egypt’s total of 53,758 confirmed cases puts it in clear lead in the region.
In East Africa, Djibouti-4,582 and Kenya-4,738 are way ahead of the rest in the region. Kenya has more dead at 123 than, Djibouti at 45. In Central Africa, Cameroon with a total of 11,610 dominates the region with confirmed coronavirus cases and fatalities-301.
Worldwide total according to the WHO is now 8, 708,008. The number of deaths increased by another 4,743 to take world’s total fatalities to 461, 715.
