SAT, JUN 13 2020-theG&BJournal- The rising caseload of COVID-19 is being driven by 10 states, all with confirmed coronavirus cases above 400. Most Covid-19 related Deaths are occurring in Kano and Lagos states and they account for more than 70% of total. Only three states are without any fatalities to date-Bauchi, Taraba and Kogi States.
On June 12 2020, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported additional 627 new confirmed cases which takes the country’s total to 15,181. The total tally of deaths is now 399 after 12 more fatalities were reported on June 12. The active cases now top 9891.
One noticeable development is the total number of samples tested so far, 88,432- which reflects the huge number of cases reported daily since Monday.
Several states have begun relaxing lockdowns to allow mostly economic activities to resume. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that as restrictions are lifted, countries must ensure that they can continue to test for COVID-19 while also providing access to essential health services.
Meanwhile, cases in Africa now top 200,000 and more than 5,600 deaths, according to the regional office for the WHO. Africa recorded its first case of the new disease in mid-February. While it took nearly 100 days to reach 100,000 cases, the jump to 200,000 cases occurred in less than 20.
“For now, Africa still only accounts for a small fraction of cases worldwide”, said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. “But the pace of the spread is quickening. Swift and early action by African countries has helped to keep numbers low but constant vigilance is needed to stop COVID-19 from overwhelming health facilities.”
