SUN, MAY 31 2020-theG&BJournal-The Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC) announced 553 more COVID-19 confirmed cases and 12 fatalities Saturday, taking the total number of coronavirus cases and deaths in the country to 9855 and 273 respectively in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
This is the highest one day tally since the virus outbreak in the country and reflects the increased efforts at tracing, tracking, testing and isolation. The NCDC has tested close to 61,000 samples from suspected coronavirus patients, but still far off the 2 million test target set due to complications in collating samples and lack of widespread testing capacity.
The number of deaths on Saturday also is the highest recorded in a day since the lockdown but more could also have been missed for various reasons.
The number of discharged patients increased to 2856 in total, freeing up more bed spaces which has been under pressure since active cases began mounting.
The 553 new cases are reported from 15 states – Lagos (378), FCT (52), Delta (23), Edo (22), Rivers (14), Ogun (13), Kaduna (12), Kano (9), Borno (7), Katsina (6), Jigawa (5), Oyo (5), Yobe (3), Plateau (3), Osun (1).
Lagos (4,755), Kano (951), FCT (616), Katsina (364) and Edo (284) are the top five states with most infected persons. Kogi is the least infected state and Cross River is yet to record a case.
Meanwhile, the NCDC has added another laboratory to the Modular Laboratory network, the Bauchi Reference Molecular Laboratory to the total number of labs with capacity to test for COVID-19 in Nigeria to 29.
