THUR, MAY 28 2020-theG&BJournal- 389 new cases of the deadly coronavirus disease were reported from 22 States of the Federation to take the country’s total of COVID-19 infection to 8733. The number of Nigeria active cases has also reached 5,978, as the disease continues to trend up in more states despite the inter-state border lockdown.
30 states of the federation now have 20 or more confirmed cases of the COVID-19 with 29 reporting one fatality or more. 254 COVID-19 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) data for 27th of May 2020 shows Lagos, the hotspot of the disease report a total of 256 new cases. The states reporting new cases are Katsina-23, Edo-22, Rivers-14), Kano-13, Adamawa-11, Akwa Ibom-11, Kaduna-7, Kwara-6, Nasarawa-6, Gombe-2, Plateau-2, Abia-2, Delta-2, Benue-2, Niger-2, Kogi-2, Oyo-2, Imo-1, Borno-1, Ogun-1 and Anambra-1.
Lagos COVID-19 cases and Kano-two of the most hit states- are now at 4,012 and 936 respectively. The FCT, Katsina and Borno States are equally seeing their numbers sweeping up. The three states now have 519, 358 and 257 cases in total respectively.
200 people or more have contacted the infection in eleven states and expert told theG&BJournal that nearly all the states of the federation will be seeing their numbers of infection in several hundreds before the peak of the disease in the country.
They are not certain when the curve will begin to flatten but projects that the country will continue to count new cases and fatalities until towards the end of the year.
The number of test conducted remained static from the previous day. The NCDC said 48,544 have so far been tested, just over 2000 in the past three days- but it is still battling to close the gap between when sample is collected, tested and result released.
Pressure on hospital beds also have continued to pile. A total of 5,978 patients are on admission with severe and mild symptoms. 10008 are people of interest.
Meanwhile, over 118,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported in the African continent-with more than 48,000 recoveries and 3,500 deaths.
In the US, over 100,000 have died but observers say this number may not reflect the actual number of people who have succumbed to the disease-it could be more. Europe has recorded about 170,000 deaths.
Worldwide, 5.6 million people have been infected by the virus and 350,000 killed, according to Johns Hopkins tally.
