COVID-19 Nigeria: Kogi State stays relatively virus free as nationwide total surpasses 40,000

MON, JULY 27 2020-theG&BJournal– As Nigeria fights continued spike in coronavirus cases, Kogi State have stayed relatively free from the pandemic, recording just 5 confirmed cases in total with two fatalities since 27th May, 2020 (exactly 2 months ago) when 2 cases were first confirmed in the State.
Since then it has recorded just three more, and it is not certain what is keeping the virus out of the State. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is yet to explain the reason for the very low count of confirmed cases despite the continued spike in neighbouring States like Benue, Plateau States as well as the FCT which respectively have 337, 834 and 3,481 confirmed cases.
But various reports cite its previous history of infectious disease management specifically with regards to its handling of past Lassa and Yellow fever outbreaks.
Cross Rivers which was the last to report confirmed cases in the country have since counted up to 40 confirmed cases with 3 fatalities since it was included in the NCDC table of States with the virus.
The NCDC reported a further 555 new cases yesterday from 18 States. The latest figure brings the total confirmed cases in Nigeria to 40,532. There were just 2 new fatalities reported to stretch the total number of coronavirus death to 858 in all. 262,579 samples have been tested nationwide while 17,374 patients have been discharged. But the number of cases being managed in various isolation centres across the country rose by 1,209 (21,091 in 20th July) in one week to 22,300.
The latest cases were confirmed from Lagos-156, Kano-65, Ogun-57, Plateau-54, Oyo-53 and Benue-43. Lagos the epicentre of the virus in Nigeria now has a total of 14,456 with 192 coronavirus related death.
The FCT confirmed 30 more cases to bring its total to 3,481. Ondo have recorded a total of 1,061 confirmed after 18 new cases were confirmed Sunday.
Kaduna-16, Akwa Ibom-13, Gombe-13, Rivers-12, Ekiti-9, Osun-8, Cross River-3, Borno-2, Edo-2 and Bayelsa-1 are the other States with new coronavirus cases.
Meanwhile, Africa’s total confirmed cases as of Sunday is now 770,300 with 16,434 deaths and 436,698 recoveries, according to the Africa CDC data.
South Africa has recorded 394,948 confirmed cases, half the continent’s total. It has confirmed 5,940 coronavirus related deaths and 229,175 recoveries.
