FRI, APRIL 10 2020-theG&BJournal- Phishing attacks aimed at infecting systems or extracting sensitive information, campaigns that defrauds citizens by offering essential products and services at suspicious prices and video-teleconferencing (VTC) hijacking (also called zoom bombing) and fake news and misinformation aimed at spreading panic, creating instability as well as promoting distrust, are a some of the cyber attacks the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy say their team have intercepted since the coronavirus pandemic outbreak in the country.
This development the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami observed is as a result of the implicit requirement of social distancing which has increased the adoption of online platforms and e-payments systems.
‘’This migration to home-based unsecure digital platforms, often with outdated security systems, can make users more vulnerable to cyberattacks. Everyone should be extra-cautious and reinforce security measures while interfacing online, especially when banking online,’’ the Minister warned Thursday.
He said it is important to observe basic cyberspace rules such as ignoring suspicious online offers, being circumspect in sharing VTC details, using complex passwords, keeping software up to date and refraining from sharing unverified information.
‘’This, no doubt, is a positive development that will support our implementation of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) for a digital Nigeria,’’ he said.
