Covid-19 Nigeria: Fewer States reported new cases but source of 76% of infection still unknown

WED, JUN 17 2020-theG&BJournal-Fewer states reported new cases of the coronavirus infection-16 States compared to 20 the previous day with total one-day tally equally dropping from 573 the previous day to 490 new cases on 17 June 2020.
Lagos leads with 142 new confirmed cases followed by the FCT(60), Bayelsa (54), Rivers(39), Delta (37), Oyo(30), Kaduna (26), Imo(23), Enugu (19), Kwara(17), Gombe (11), Ondo (10), Bauchi (8), Ogun (7), Borno (6) and Benue(1).
Rivers State, Edo and Oyo States’ COVID-19 profile are steadily climbing and it is believed current reported figures could be more than double with adequate testing. All three States have total of 631, 620 and 605 confirmed cases of the deadly disease-ranking them 4th, 5th and 6th respectively behind Lagos (7,461), Kano (1158) and FCT (1324).
As at June 16 2020, the cumulative number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Nigeria is 17,148. 25 deaths were reported to take total to 455 and recoveries at 5,623. Also, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has conducted a total of 96,402 tests across the country. Active cases are 11,070,
The worrying statistics is that 76% (12,684 as at 15 June) of those affected are people with unknown exposure. 24% are between the ages of 31 -40, which indicates a higher level of infection on senior citizens. 22% (3610} are contact cases while only 2% of infection comes from contacts with travel history.
