MON, JULY 20 2020-theG&BJournal-Coronavirus cases are surging in Nigeria with three States driving the surge. More than 60% of cases in the country are reported in Lagos FCT and Oyo.
The FCT, according to the Sunday figures reported by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), have now surpassed 3000 cases (3,027 total) with 36 fatalities from coronavirus.
In Oyo, the pandemic surge, according to a senior health official in Ibadan, the State capital, is alarming with cases spreading way beyond expectation. Confirmed cases now totals 2,167, half of which was added in the past 2 months. Over 1000 patients are on admission in cramped hospitals around the State.
Lagos, the epicentre has witnessed unrelenting surge as well. 13,438 confirmed cases with 176 deaths as of Sunday, 20 July 2020, makes it still the most ravaged State in the country.
Nationwide total of confirmed coronavirus is now 36,663. 789 have died with 20,769 reported as active cases. The NCDC claims they have tested 212,201 samples.
Meanwhile, over 1 million people were infected with coronavirus in the past week around the globe, and close to half of them came from the United States, Brazil and India.
India is the third country to surpass 1 million cases behind the US and Brazil. In the US confirmed cases tops more than 3.5 million cases, meaning that 1 out of 100 Americans has been infected.
Africa is reporting a total of 701,711 confirmed cases, according to Africa CDC. 14,938 have died.
